Step 1: Wrap kitchen string around the cake. Cross the ends and tighten until a mark, that you can use as a guide, is left on the cake
Step 2: To make the mark easier to see from above, insert toothpicks at intervals along the mark - you'll use these as a guide as you cut
Step 3: Place the cake on a cake stand to raise it slightly. Holding the top firmly, use a large serrated knife to carefully cut it in half
